"Gender is in everything; everything has its Masculine and Feminine Principles; Gender manifests on all planes." -- The Kybalion
This Principle embodies the truth that there is GENDER manifested in everything--the Masculine and Feminine Principles ever at work. This is true not only of the Physical Plane, but of the Mental and even the Spiritual Planes. On the Physical Plane, the Principle manifests as SEX, on the higher planes it takes higher forms, but the Principle is ever the same. No creation, physical, mental or spiritual, is possible without this Principle. An understanding of its laws will throw light on many a subject that has perplexed the minds of men. The Principle of Gender works ever in the direction of generation, regeneration, and creation. Everything, and every person, contains the two Elements or Principles, or this great Principle, within it, him or her. Every Male thing has the Female Element also; every Female contains also the Male Principle. If you would understand the philosophy of Mental and Spiritual Creation, Generation, and Re-generation, you must understand and study this Hermetic Principle. It contains the solution of many mysteries of Life. We caution you that this Principle has no reference to the many base, pernicious and degrading lustful theories, teachings and practices, which are taught under fanciful titles, and which are a prostitution of the great natural principle of Gender. Such base revivals of the ancient infamous forms of Phallicism tend to ruin mind, body and soul, and the Hermetic Philosophy has ever sounded the warning note against these degraded teachings which tend toward lust, licentiousness, and perversion of Nature's principles. If you seek such teachings, you must go elsewhere for them--Hermeticism contains nothing for you along these lines. To the pure, all things are pure; to the base, all things are base.
To most Regular Masons, this principal may seem out of place, simply for the very reason that it speaks to the duality of men and women. But looking through the veil of Isis, we can find attributes of the fraternity that speak to the union of masculine and feminine attributes, predominately in the very degrees themselves. By examination of the system, the sublime art is truly a manifestation of a creative force that links together the action and the will into a new creation which is the very work of creating new Freemasons.
Symbolically, we can divide this into the labor of the lodge and the ritual that is performed which takes the form of masculine and feminine correspondence. A positive (+) and negative (-) union to merge together and manifest through their practice which leads to the transformation of the neophyte into the initiate. This negative, however, is not an ill or corrupt force, but merely the opposition on scale to one another. Throughout the degrees, we find this principal in the Sun and moon, the black and white pillars as illuminated on the tarot, and the level to the vertical plumb. They are each in harmonious balance to one another to effect the candidate’s creation, the apprentice to a fellow, and a fellow to a Master.
In this principal we also receive a special caution which is the idea of not to confuse the aspect of masculine and feminine with that of gender or of propagation. Some who have confused this delineation have perverted it to become a symbol of a base generation. As tradition bears out, this Principal of Gender illuminates the separation of women and men in the aspect of this process. It is an act of theurgy, then, that is the unions of these vibrations come to this form and function, which harmonizes together. That does not imply that it cannot be practiced outside of Freemasonry, but for this analysis it must be rendered in its specific way to achieve its ends.
We can associate the separation to the examples set about from alchemy in the process to achieve a high degree of purity in the minerals being transformed towards the creation of the Philosophers Stone. It is in this context that purity benefits the clarity of purpose to become the means of creation.
